Nocturne 1
Friday, November 21st
The 10th anniversary program unfolds at Spotify O-EAST in Shibuya. Dedicated to singular and unconventional expressions, Nocturne 1 explores the frontier where sound, light, and technology merge with physical sensations.
Visionary artists from Japan and around the world unleash experimental energy through daring audiovisual performances. Immerse yourself into a deep multisensory experience that will challenge and awaken your perception.
You can join the full program or dive into the more festive and rhythmic live sets after midnight (tickets available here). To set the mood, here are five of the seven acts that will launch the Nocturne Series (check the full lineup here):
ALVA NOTO DE
A leading figure in electronic and visual art, Berlin-based artist and composer Carsten Nicolai returns to MUTEK.JP. Known as Alva Noto, he has been featured at the Guggenheim, Centre Pompidou, and Tate Modern, merging sound, science, and structure into precise, emotionally resonant performances that continue to redefine minimalism. Expect a meticulously crafted, hypnotic experience.
Here’s some inspiration from his works:

∈Y∋ + C.O.L.O JP
A collaboration between ∈Y∋, frontman of Boredoms and avant-garde creator of the monumental Boadrum project, and C.O.L.O, founder of the multimedia collective Cosmic Lab, known for works such as Jeff Mills’ THE TRIP – Enter the Black Hole. Together, they explore the boundary between analog and digital, delivering a powerful audiovisual performance of sound and light. Can’t miss it!

GEZAN JP
Osaka-born alternative band GEZAN channels raw intensity through fearless, genre-bending performances. Since 2009, they have gained acclaim both in Japan and internationally for their radical sound and socially conscious vision.
Led by frontman Mahito the People, the group operates their own independent label, Jusangetsu, and has brought their powerful live energy to festivals such as Fuji Rock and Uganda's Nyege Nyege. Get a glimpse of their world here:

goat JP
An experimental rhythm ensemble from Osaka, formed in 2013. By abandoning traditional scales, goat builds music from sound textures, noise, muted tones, and constantly shifting instruments.
Their performances generate tension through manually reproduced polyrhythms and slight discrepancies, creating a trance-like, uplifting effect. Often described as urban ethnic grooves, whatever you call it, this is another must-see!

machìna KR/JP
From Seoul via Tokyo and Berlin, machìna blends improvisation with deep emotional intensity in her electronic music. Centered around modular synths and vocals, she crafts live techno sessions that are both intricate and warm.
She has collaborated with many fashion brands, and has earned critical acclaim with performances at MUTEK Montreal, Berghain’s Silvester Klubnacht, and Richie Hawtin’s From Our Minds tour.
You haven’t experienced one of her sets yet?
