DAY 1 | Friday, November 20
The Current State of Audiovisual Art:
Structure, Improvisation, and Generative Expression
Now in its 11th year, MUTEK.JP takes over an art museum setting for the first time in Tokyo. MoN Takanawa: The Museum of Narratives will present a program unique to MUTEK—an organization that has long showcased audiovisual art by integrating cutting-edge technology with experimental approaches. Artists from Japan and abroad, each employing unique methods to compose sound, visuals, and space, will gather once again for this federative event.
Day 1 explores the evolving possibilities of audiovisual art through diverse techniques—including 3D, real-time generation, improvisation, light, and physicality. Experience live performances that engage the entire space!
A/Visions 1: Beyond 3D
Max Cooper UK — Feeling Is Structure
Max Cooper presents his new work Feeling Is Structure as an immersive 3D audiovisual live performance.
Returning to MUTEK.JP ten years after his appearance at the festival’s inaugural edition, following a series of sold-out shows in Japan, the multidisciplinary artist works across music, science and visual art. Feeling Is Structure explores how structures in sound, architecture, biology and art shape human emotion. Eschewing improvisation, Cooper uses meticulously designed systems and generative processes to create both sound and visuals.
Experience an audiovisual work that redefines the possibilities of 3D!
Play 1: Structure, Improvisation and Depth
Real-time sound and image, sound and lighting as a spatial medium, the imperfections of the human body, and precisely constructed 3D: four acts, each with a distinct approach, present audiovisual expressions that can only exist in a live setting.
Grand River IT — Temporary
Returning to MUTEK.JP following her 2024 appearance, Grand River is the project of Berlin-based Dutch-Italian composer and musician Aimée Portioli.
Her forthcoming album Temporary—set for release this autumn via Editions Mego—explores themes of impermanence and change, drawing upon personal experiences of grief and loss. The performance will feature a sound centered around guitar and electronics, combined with lighting by Andrea Familari, creating an immersive live experience where music and light are seamlessly integrated. The result brings detailed sonic composition together with a carefully structured spatial environment.
An invitation from the artist “to experience the present while already feeling the trace of its disappearance, something both painful and blissful.”
Robert Lippok & Lucas Gutierrez DE+AR — AVB2BVA
The German audiovisual artist known for his work with To Rococo Rot, which also performed at the first MUTEK.JP, joins an Argentine visual artist and industrial designer in AVB2BVA, extending B2B into the audiovisual field.
Sound and real-time visuals react as the work is composed on the spot. By blurring the boundaries between music and visuals and authorship, their differing forms of expression become a unified whole.
Join a unique B2B experience, full of improvisation and tension!
Seulement CA/QC — Bricolage Architecture
A solo project by Montreal-based electronic musician and audiovisual artist Mathieu Arsenault, Seulement spans performance, music production, and experimental film, following his work as frontman of Technical Kidman.
His work explores the tension between advanced digital technology and the imperfections of the human body. Voice and gesture are transformed through sound and moving image, creating works that retain a distinctly human trace.
Don’t miss this live interplay between body and technology!
Masayuki Azegami & Seiichi Sega JP — K/Hi 3D/AV Live
A collaborative audiovisual project combining solid, precise sound with generative design, physics simulations, and CG. Launched in 2022, K/Hi visualizes natural laws and phenomena through precise synchronization of sound and image, while exploring space and perception.
For this performance, stereoscopic 3D creates a unique sense of spatial depth through minimal visuals and sharply defined audio.
Experience this mix of sound, image, and space live.
From immersive 3D audiovisual performances to experimental electronic sound, generative visuals, and new approaches to live experience, Day 1 brings together artists exploring the space between technology, perception, and human expression.
