Mission

MUTEK.JP is a cultural association that is dedicated to the dissemination and development of digital creativity in sound, music, and audio-visual art. In 2016, Tokyo joined the burgeoning family of MUTEK events all over the world. Established with the same curatorial vision as its Montréal headquarters, including a mandate to cultivate local talent in a global context, MUTEK.JP provides a platform for the most original and visionary artists currently working in their fields.

Since its first edition, the MUTEK.JP festival has distinguished itself through its original and avant-garde programming driven by an international outlook and cultural exchange. In terms of content, the festival’s range strives to be diverse, with interests in both the experimental and the playful sides of digital creativity. MUTEK.JP’s programming intends to create an open platform that can support innovation within electronic music and digital art. This is a world of constant evolution and incessant refinement – the “MU” in MUTEK refers consciously to the notion of "mutation".

Since its inception, the MUTEK.JP festival has presented a considerable number of renowned artists while simultaneously providing an important showcase for up-and-coming talent. The festival provides an open, inviting environment that encourages rewarding exchanges between artists, professionals, and the public; MUTEK.JP is a point of convergence, drawing participants from all over the world to profit from a context of active discovery.

MUTEK.JP is part of the global MUTEK, which since 2002 drives to increase its international renown, with recurring festival editions in Montréal, Mexico City, Barcelona, Tokyo, Buenos Aires, Dubai, and San Francisco. Beyond its permanent residencies MUTEK has continuously maintained a high level of year-round activity around the globe, including collaborations with different festivals and organizations, and tours across several continents. To date, MUTEK has presented in over 110 events in 43 different cities, 20 countries and on 5 continents since its first international activity in 2002.

By supporting and nurturing its international activities and links, MUTEK.JP is aiming to contribute to the evolution of the field of digital creativity in Japan, while propelling Japanese artists onto the world stage. Through the thorough exchange of artistic content, technological, entrepreneurial and cultural knowledge within and beyond the borders of the network, MUTEK.JP seeks to spread the reputation of Tokyo and Japan as a mecca for avant-garde electronic music and digital art.
