MUTEK JP

Since 2016, MUTEK.JP festival has stood as a central platform for electronic music and digital creativity in Tokyo, where experimentation, technology, and cultural exchange constantly intersect. What began as an ambitious step in connecting the City with MUTEK’s global network has grown into a vital meeting point for artists, thinkers, and audiences from Japan and across the globe.

Through performances, talks, and encounters that cross disciplines and generations, MUTEK.JP has cultivated a space rooted in curiosity and innovation, where emerging voices share the stage with established pioneers. It has become more than a festival: a community shaped by the belief that art and technology can open new ways of experiencing the world.

This 10th anniversary is not only a celebration of what has been achieved, but a call to keep pushing forward, to continue exploring sound, image, and immersive experiences that challenge, inspire, and expand how we engage with creativity today and tomorrow. Legendary names and cutting-edge acts of this milestone edition include GEZAN, goat, ALVA NOTO, Daito Manabe, Jacques Greene & Nosaj Thing, NONOTAK, Kyoka & Ami Kusakabe (Sakanaction), Open Reel Ensemble, machìna, Nicola Cruz, and many more.

Nocturne 1

The Nocturne series takes over Shibuya’s Spotify O-EAST for three nights of immersive audiovisual journeys, unfolding from night until morning. This program blends experimental sound, digital art, and club culture into a seamless experience—pushing the boundaries of music concepts and styles through innovative performances, immersive AV shows, and high-energy sets.

Nocturne 1 spotlights unique sounds that expand the possibilities of music. Berlin-based artist Alva Noto dissolves the boundaries between sound and light, liberating the listener’s senses with his cutting-edge sonic explorations. The experimental rhythm ensemble goat, led by Koshiro Hino, performs programmed polyrhythms entirely by hand, creating a physical, tribal groove born from subtle dissonances.

Late into the night, Japanese alternative rock band GEZAN unleashes raw energy with their wall of sound, while Korean artist machìna, working between Tokyo and Berlin, transforms the floor with her latest live set. Closing out the night, Ecuadorian producer Nicola Cruz channels Andean rhythms through electronic music, awakening a primal pulse deep within the body.

Nocturne 2

Nocturne 2 opens with a focus on groundbreaking, immersive audiovisual performances that fuse technology, sound, and imagery, before seamlessly shifting into the pulse of contemporary US and UK club sounds.

Paris-based art unit NONOTAK synchronizes music and visuals within a dazzling environment of light-drawn lines, curves, and geometric patterns, creating a performance that captivates both sight and sound. Daito Manabe brings back his acclaimed audiovisual performance that stunned audiences earlier this year at Barcelona’s Sónar Festival. London-based electronic producer and AV artist Halina Rice presents a special audiovisual set, while Vienna-based MONOCOLOR performs Sentient Ocean, a real-time composition of sound and visuals that evokes a unique space between nature and synthesis.

The night then shifts into the club dimension: Montreal’s Jacques Greene and Los Angeles’ Nosaj Thing join forces as Verses GT, a new collaboration already drawing attention with their debut album on LuckyMe. Also from Montreal, Martyn Bootyspoon takes the stage with a distinctive audiovisual set, closing the night with his forward-thinking club energy.

The evening opens with an ambient live set by kyoka in collaboration with Aimi Kusakari, bassist of Sakanaction. Making her long-awaited Japan debut, Marie Davidson—Grammy-nominated and known for her latest release on Soulwax’s DEEWEE label—takes the stage.

Open Reel Ensemble, led by Ei Wada, transforms open-reel tape recorders into instruments for a one-of-a-kind performance. Duo WaqWaq KingdomScotch Rolex (Shigeru Ishihara) and former King Midas Sound vocalist Kiki Hitomi—deliver their signature fusion of dancehall, techno, and polyrhythms with vocals infused with a playful, offbeat humor. From Montreal, producer Guillaume Coutu-Dumont and visual artist Line Katcho present Les Empires, an evocative audiovisual performance.

The festival finale unfolds with a special live session by Satoshi Tomiie, Kuniyuki Takahashi, and Manami Sakamoto, merging improvisation, dance music, and visuals to close out MUTEK.JP Edition 10 in powerful style.
