The Early Years: Experiments in Sound and Light (2016-2017)

MUTEK.JP began with a series of bold experiments. The inaugural 2016 festival saw Martin Messier captivate audiences with a performance using sheet metal and cables, while Herman Kolgen astonished them by transforming the Earth's magnetic fields into sound.

Celebrating the 20th anniversary of German label Raster-Noton, founders Alva Noto and Byetone performed In 2017, Miraikan- the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation's dome theater became a venue, providing immersive experiences with a live performance of the game "Rez Infinite" by Ken Ishii and Tetsuya Mizuguchi, and a 3D visual show by Woulg & Push 1 stop.

A New Era: Hybrid Formats and the Pursuit of Diversity (2020-2024)

In 2020, following the COVID-19 pandemic, MUTEK.JP evolved into a hybrid format, blending physical venues in Shibuya with virtual spaces. This new approach opened avenues for innovative expressions, including ALTER the android KAGURA, which explored the boundaries between humans and technology, and performances by Open Reel Ensemble, who manipulate open-reel tape recorders as musical instruments. The festival also featured profound collaborations such as those between Jim O’Rourke and Eiko Ishibashi. In 2021, the festival premiered Antibodies Collective’s stage work at LINE CUBE SHIBUYA and introduced immersive live sound experiences using Wata Igarashi’s drum & bass soundscape system.

In 2022, MUTEK.JP showcased the overwhelming AV performances of Ryoji Ikeda and Kyoka & Shohei Fujimoto, while also introducing immersive XR installations. In 2023, the festival presented cutting-edge international collaborations, including performances by YPY with the taiko drumming group Kodo and Seiichi Sega, a culmination A/V set by Daito Manabe, the Japan debut of Italian art collective SPIME.IM, and collaborations featuring Phew, Oren Ambarchi, and Akiko Nakayama.

By 2024, the festival featured artists such as Caterina Barbieri, VMO, Sapphire Slows & Myriam Boucher, and Iglooghost, curating a multi-faceted program that spanned genres, styles, and modes of expression.
