MUTEK.JP 2021 - Open call for young creators

MUTEK 2021 Open Call 01

(日本語版はこちらから)

In 2020, MUTEK.JP faced unexpected challenges that led us to create a 5th edition that took place in our usual physical venues, in addition to online through a customized virtual platform. This unprecedented hybrid festival experience brought together live performances, a gallery of digital artworks, and conferences in a universe without borders.

In an effort to develop and support up-and-coming talent within our Japanese community we are thrilled to launch our inaugural call for projects for MUTEK.JP’s 6th festival edition, which will once again take place in a hybrid form in Tokyo in December 2021!

We are inviting artists under the age of 25 who are exploring new aesthetic avenues in digital creation to submit their projects in the three categories of Virtual Gallery, VJ, and Virtual Reality (VR) as further outlined below.

1. VIRTUAL GALLERY

As MUTEK.JP will continue to take place in a hybrid format we are continuing the creative explorations on our virtual festival platform on virtual.mutek.org.

We are specifically calling for submissions, which explore web-based interactive and video works that push boundaries and challenge conventions in the digital creation sphere, or offer a pioneering concept within the virtual environment.

2. VJ

As part of our live programming we are looking for up-and-coming visual artists that explore the innovative use of digital imagery. The visual artists are aimed to be paired with participating musical performers at the festival to jointly explore the intersection of image and sound.

3. VIRTUAL REALITY (VR)

Since 2017 MUTEK.JP has been engaged in developing and promoting the creative application of Virtual Reality. As such we are looking for interactive, immersive, XR (virtual or augmented reality) projects that can be presented in both a physical and virtual environment.

ELIGIBLE PERSONS

Please note that this call applies ONLY to Japanese artists at home and abroad, as well as submissions by foreign artists residing in Japan. The age limit for submissions is 25 years.

APPLICATION PROCESS

We strongly encourage applicants to accompany their submissions (in
Japanese or English) with artistic portfolios, a project concept (500-word maximum) and motivational letter (300-word maximum).

All selected projects will be paid for, depending on the scale, level of development, type of submission etc, to be discussed with participants individually.

The submission deadline for all MUTEK.JP 2021 proposals is July 31, 2021.

Please send your submissions to opencall@mutek.jp

Due to the large volume of submissions, only artists being considered to perform at the festival will be contacted. We would like to thank all candidates in advance for their interest!
