MUTEK.JP Unveils Its Complete Music Lineup For The 2024 Edition

MUTEK.JP, the festival celebrating electronic music and digital art in Tokyo, is thrilled to announce its return for its ninth edition from Friday, November 22 to Sunday, November 24, 2024.

This year’s event will unfold over three days at two iconic venues in the heart of Japan’s capital: Spotify O-EAST and WOMB. Under the theme of "exploring the evolving relationship between music and technology at the forefront of sonic innovation," MUTEK.JP 2024 will offer audiences a groundbreaking showcase of audio-visual live performances merging experimental creativity with cutting-edge technology.

The 2024 lineup features over 25 internationally acclaimed artists, including the celebrated electronic composer Caterina Barbieri, the extreme art music project VMO a.k.a Violent Magic Orchestra, the visionary electro-acoustic artist Kara-Lis Coverdale, Grand River, Maher Daniel, Sapphire Slows, Tasha, Risa Taniguchi, Kaito aka Hiroshi Watanabe, and Masayoshi Fujita, among others.

In addition to the main performances, MUTEK.JP 2024 will include conferences and exhibitions at Shibuya Hikarie Hall B, further expanding its reach into the realms of media art and cultural discourse. Details on these activities will be announced soon.

is being presented as part of the JAPAN CULTURAL EXPO 2.0(Japan Arts Council / Agency for Cultural Affairs, Government of Japan) , with special support from Tokyu Corporation, Shibuya Hikarie, and JONNIE WALKER BLUE LABEL.

Tickets are now available for purchase. Early bird passports, priced at ¥20,000, are on sale from September 24 to October 27, 2024, and provide access to all performances at Spotify O-EAST and WOMB. After October 28, the price will increase to ¥25,000.


Tickets are limited, and sales will conclude once capacity is reached.

This year’s MUTEK.JP features an exciting lineup, including a special live performance by Berlin-based electronic composer Caterina Barbieri. Dutch-Italian composer and sound designer Grand River, also based in Berlin, will present an A/V (audiovisual) live set.

The art music project VMO a.k.a Violent Magic Orchestra, acclaimed at the 2024 Sónar Festival, will also be performing. Electro-acoustic artist Kara-Lis Coverdale will showcase her innovative electronic set, and Hiroshi Watanabe, a renowned figure in the global music scene, will deliver an engaging audiovisual live show. UK DJ Tasha, celebrated in the drum and bass community, will make her Japanese debut, while RISA TANIGUCHI & H2KGRAPHICS will perform a special A/V live set.

Palestinian artist Maher Daniel, known for his collaborations with Ricardo Villalobos at various international festivals, will present his first Japanese live performance. The versatile Margaret Dygas, a highly regarded DJ inboth techno and house circles, will also take the stage.

MUTEK.JP will bring together a range of groundbreaking artists, offering a diverse program of sound, digital art,audiovisual performances, and media arts, all aimed at exploring new concepts and forms of creative expressions.

The November 22 (Friday) event at Spotify O-EAST will feature "Nocturne 1," a program focusing on large-scale audiovisual experiences where technology, sound, and visuals merge. The evening will showcase a special live set by Berlin-based electronic composer Caterina Barbieri and visual artist Ruben Spini. Additionally, Grand River, an Italian composer and sound designer based in Berlin, will present the Japan premiere of his A/V live set "All Above," with visual artist Marco Ciceri.

The program also includes an A/V live set by Swiss electronic composer and digital artist Milian Mori and Toru Izumida, who runs the audio-visual event "Public Visuals" in Tokyo. Furthermore, scuy_v0id (Hiroki Okamoto), known for his diverse background in architecture, photography, graphics, and programming, will deliver a special live performance.

On November 23 (Saturday), Spotify O-EAST hosts "Nocturne 2," a program focusing on experimental and multi-faceted approaches to sound, noise, and immersive visuals. The evening will feature the extreme art project VMO a.k.a Violent Magic Orchestra, which blends electronic music, black metal, gripping visuals, smoke and strobe lights. They will deliver one of the most extreme live acts going today, engaging the body, vision, hearing, and mind simultaneously.

Additionally, YUKO ARAKI, known for her experimental electronic noise and industrial music, will perform alongside the prolific new media artist JACKSON kaki. The event will also showcase a new type of audiovisual show by Meuko! Meuko!, one of East Asia’s brightest new stars, in collaboration with the Taipei-based new media art group NONEYE. Paris-based composer Aho Ssan and visual artist Sevi Iko Dømochevsky will present their multimedia project Rhizomes AV.

Lastly, Albert.DATA will make his Japan debut with "Slowly Fading into Data," a transformative journey exploring the meaning of being human, contemporary perception, existence, and the boundaries of identity.

On November 24 (Sunday), "Nocturne 3" at Spotify O-EAST will present a diverse program connecting electroacoustic music, jazz, minimal sounds, and media art. The lineup features Kara-Lis Coverdale, a new-generation electro-acoustic artist, performing an electro set. Hiroshi Watanabe will showcase an audiovisual live performance, drawing on his extensive work with numerous labels worldwide.

Tokyo-based producer Sapphire Slows will collaborate with Canadian visual artist Myriam Boucher. The opening performance will be by vibraphonist, marimbist, and composer Masayoshi Fujita, who will present his new work "Migratory," released in September this year.

The annual all-night program "MUTEK.JP × WOMB" will take place on November 22 (Friday) and 23 (Saturday). The first night will focus on techno, featuring Tasha, who will make her debut in Japan with her unique solid groove inspired by British bass and the 4×4 techno format from Berlin and Detroit. Additionally, Tokyo-based producer/DJ RISA TANIGUCHI and H2KGRAPHICS will present an A/V live performance.

The event will also include an A/V performance by media artist and techno producer Makoto Inoue, who is based in Berlin.
