Ryoichi Kurokawa (b. 1978, Osaka, Japan) is a Berlin-based audiovisual artist and composer renowned for immersive installations and live performances that synthesize sound and image into cohesive sensory experiences. His practice explores the interplay between natural phenomena, technological systems, and human perception through precisely synchronized abstract visuals and experimental electronic soundscapes.

Kurokawa's works transcend conventional boundaries of sensory perception, crafting meticulously orchestrated environments where digital precision converges with organic fluidity. Drawing on scientific data patterns and natural processes, he transforms mathematical models and biological rhythms into art that balances technological sophistication with poetic resonance. For over 20 years, Kurokawa has been a trailblazer in the audiovisual art scene, and his innovative approach continues to influence a new generation of audiovisual artists. In the contemporary art world, his creations have been exhibited and performed at renowned institutions and festivals including Tate Modern (UK), Centre Pompidou (FR), the Venice Biennale (IT), Louvre Abu Dhabi (AE), Pinakothek der Moderne (DE), Palais de Tokyo (FR), and Barbican Centre (UK). Ryoichi Kurokawa — nD

"nD" is a diptych audiovisual performance piece and the third iteration of "cm:av_c," a project developed over many years. In this work, the phenomena of sound and vision, the modes of abstraction and concreteness, and the qualities of meaningfulness and meaninglessness are embodied in a continuous fluctuation between duality and non-duality. The diptych is not arranged simply to present opposition or difference, but as a site where perception oscillates between separation and inseparability. By treating and fusing sound and image at an abstract level, the piece creates an intense audiovisual experience that stimulates sight and hearing simultaneously. This pure audiovisual expression, stripped of meaning, liberates the audience from the constraints of interpretation and guides them toward a more direct, sensory experience.

The "cm:av_c" project has been a long-standing pursuit since the early stages of Kurokawa's career and strongly reflects his unique and iconic artistic language. The first version premiered in 2005 and has since been presented worldwide, including at Tate Modern (UK), Ars Electronica (AT), and MUTEK (CA). The second version, "syn_ [ cm:av_c 2 ]," was released in 2011 and performed in over 20 countries in the following years. "nD [ cm:av_c 3 ]" represents the latest evolution of the project.
